Off the Beaten Plate: Sanskruti’s Most Surprising Favourites

Some of our most special dishes don’t always get noticed. They sit quietly on the menu while the usual favourites like dal, naan, aloo gobhi, paneer makhani take the spotlight. But many of our guests have told us how much they love the unconventional superstars on our menu from the likes of kaju karela to kela nu shaak.
Next time you visit, ask us about one of these hidden gems, something that might just become your next favourite! Here’s a list of some of quirky bestsellers at our restaurants:
Gluten Free Bread Option
- Masala Bajra Rotlo (gluten‑free millet flatbread)

What to expect: Millet bread spiced with cumin, turmeric and fenugreek served hot from the tandoor.
Why try it: A hearty gluten‑free alternative that’s fragrant and satisfying. Goes well with any curry. You can read more about the Indian breads our blog- ‘6 Indian Breads You Need To Try‘. If you’d like to know more about the gluten free items on our menu, visit this page.
Like Turkish Dolma, But Make It Indian
- Patra (steamed colocasia leaf rolls)
~ Himansh Kapoor
“I come from the north of India and I have never been able to find patra this good outside of India. It was too good! Reminds me of home.”
What to expect: Made from tender colocasia (arbi) leaves layered with a spiced gram flour paste, then rolled, steamed, and lightly pan-fried.
Why try it: Light aromatic and unlike anything in typical Indian menus.
Curries like nothing you’ve tried before:
- Kathal Lazeez (jackfruit curry)
~Simon White
“I’m a meat eater normally but fancied something different, the jackfruit curry was really good.”
What to expect: Young jackfruit slow‑cooked in North Indian spices until tender
Why try it: Savoury hearty and surprisingly satisfying even for meat eaters as it mimics the pulled meat texture. Kathal Lazeez and tandoori roti are a match made in heaven.
- Kaju Masala (cashew nut gravy)
~ Jenn Hall
“The cashew curry paired with garlic naan was DIVINE! It is a must try!”
What to expect: Cashews simmered in creamy tomato onion gravy with subtle spices
Why try it: Smooth indulgence with nutty texture and aromatic depth. Jenn says Kaju masala with garlic naan is great. We’ll go with it Jenn!
- Bhindi Anari (okra with pomegranate)
Joseph Collins
“I would recommend the bindi anari – lovely sweet and spicy okra chunks in a delicious gravy.”
What to expect: Okra stir‑fried with onions, tomatoes and topped with fresh pomegranate seeds.
Why try it: Crispy fried okra meets sweet pomegranate and creates a symphony in every bite. Pairing it with Lachha paratha will surprise you.
- Kela nu Shaak (banana curry)
~Alina McLellan
”Seriously tasty food, a great menu with lots of stuff I haven’t seen elsewhere in Manchester, e.g. banana curry – delicious!”
What to expect: Ripe banana cooked with turmeric curry leaves jaggery and lemon for tangy‑sweet balance.
Why try it: Unconventional but comforting and deeply flavourful. It is a Gujarati staple! Try pairing the curry with pilau rice.
- Ringan no Oro (smoky aubergine mash)
~Griffith Jones
”We also had the chargrilled aubergine curry with a vegan peshwari naan. We both agree that it is one of the tastiest curries we have ever had.”
What to expect: Char‑grilled aubergine mashed with tomatoes, onion and regional spices.
Why try it: Smoky earthy and richly textured. Ringan no oro with peshwari naan is a surprisingly good combo of sweet coconut bread + char grilled aubergine.
